What Are the Ingredients Found in
Hypoallergenic Cosmetics?

In theory, hypoallergenic cosmetics are products that are suppose to cause fewer allergic reactions when compared to other similar products. Many women that have sensitive skin believe these products will be gentler on their skin. However, if you were to ask ten different companies ‘What are the ingredients found in hypoallergenic cosmetics?’ you’re likely to get ten different answers. The reason is there are no federal standards for the term “hypoallergenic”. Therefore, hypoallergenic can mean whatever a company wants it to mean.

You must keep in mind that some products that have natural ingredients do cause allergic reactions. For example, if you have an allergy to some types of plants or animals, you could have an allergic reaction to cosmetics, which contain those types of plants or animals. Lanolin from sheep wool is a good example. It is contained within many lotions, but it is also a common cause of allergies.

Cosmetics are primarily made up of fragrances and preservatives. The most common causes of skin problems and irritation are fragrances. You should look for cosmetics that are labeled “fragrance-free” or “without perfume”. These cosmetic products have no fragrances added to produce that wonderful smell.

The second most common cause of skin problems in cosmetics is preservatives. Preservatives are intended to accomplish two things in your cosmetic products. First, they prevent bacteria and fungus from growing. Preservatives also protect the cosmetic product from damage caused by air and light.

Some preservatives that are frequently used in cosmetics include parabe, imidazolidinyl urea, Quaternium-15, DMDM hydantoin, phenoxyethanol, and formaldehyde.

Keep in mind that cosmetics are not drugs. Drugs are used to treat or prevent disease in the skin or body. Cosmetics do not change or alter the body’s functions.

So, the next time someone wants to talk to you about hypoallergenic ingredients in cosmetics, remember it can mean whatever a company wants it to mean.
